Have you ever had the "oh, it will never happen to me" feeling when you hear about something bad on the news? That's how a lot of people feel about their data. Sure, other companies lose their data or have it stolen, but it will never happen to your company, right? Well, the fact is that an accident or malicious attack could happen to anyone at any time. Companies need to do all they can to have proper data storage for when something bad does happen.

Some of the most commonly used data storage solutions have different advantages depending on the situation. Some are rather inexpensive, but all of can be used in some say to backup, store, and transfer important data.

The first solution we'll take a look at is one that is commonly used on personal computers: thumb drives. Also called flash or jump drives, these devices are small and can be carried in a purse, pocket, around the neck, or on a keychain. A user can save important documents to the drive and either store them or easily transfer them to another computer.

External hard drives are another solution. This data storage solution allows a user to back up entire hard drives where, when it isn't connected, won't be subjected to attacks or other threats that might cause the loss of data. These are better suited to long term storage solutions instead of daily work, though, since accessing it on a regular basis can grow tedious.

There is a newer solution that a lot of people are using these days: online data storage. The idea here is that a company or individual can upload their data to an offsite server that is managed by a company that specializes in this. The other benefit of this solution is that you can get access to your data as long as you have a connection to the internet. It also can save a company a lot of money because they won't have to hire an IT staff to maintain the integrity of their data.

A fourth solution is the network attached data storage solution. This is an onsite system that is usually managed by an IT staff. This type of system creates a centralized storage area where multiple team members can store, retrieve, and backup important information. As you probably guessed, it is one of the more expensive solutions but is also one of the best for a lot of companies.

Different companies will find that different options work better for them. So in the end the best thing to do is to learn about the different data storage options that are out there so you can make the best decision for your individual needs.
