How old is your A/C Unit? Around 10 years old? With the improvements made within the last decade, you could have a cooler home, for less than you are paying now. Efficiency goes out the window after a few years and replacing always sounds expensive. Until now.
Efficiency SEER (Seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is the rating system at which an Air Conditioning Units efficiency is judged. The average A/C unit that is 8-10 years old ran at somewhere around an 8 SEER Level at time of install. Now almost a decade later, that unit may be running at only 5-6 SEER. This is where poor energy efficiency comes into play. A higher SEER means higher efficiency. As of January 2006, all residential air conditioners sold in the United States must have a SEER of at least 13. Just looking at the ratings should show you that you are probably running an inefficient unit which is poorly cooling your home, and charging you an arm and a leg. Upgrading to a newer unit has upfront costs (unless financed) that will more than pay for itself during its life span. The government is even offering an energy efficiency tax credit of $1,500.00 for an upgrade like this. What it comes down to is the money you spend monthly on the Air Conditioning portion of your Electric Bill, could be paying for a new unit with higher Efficiency, a longer life, and better cooling power. Will little to no additional cost. We all want to save money. The question is " How much will we save? The amount saved is going to depend greatly on the SEER rating of the new air conditioner and the number of hours the air conditioner will run. Therefore, the higher the SEER rating and the longer it runs, the greater the savings. The chart below shows savings that can be realized when moving from an 8 to an 18 SEER air conditioner. On average there is an annual savings of 56% when transitioning from an older 8 SEER unit to a new 18 SEER Unit. Remember - the higher the SEER rating, the greater the efficiency, and the more you can save on your energy bills.
Is financing a good option? Financing gives you the ability to spread out your payments. This means your immediate out of pocket is zero. The savings compiled monthly from your electric bill savings also means that those finance charges you acquire will equal little to none. Almost like a free upgrade!
Small repairs, big bills Small repairs add up quickly. The regular maintenance fees generated by Air Conditioning technicians and parts such as a Compressor Saver or A/C lubricant may look small per visit, but try adding up the stack. The only other alternative is a new unit. Looking at a large number for a new unit makes it seem out of your reach. But taking into consideration what you are already paying monthly, there is a solution.
Going Green is easy Using an environment-friendly R410A refrigerant, on top of a higher SEER Air Conditioning unit, you are doing your part in going green. Saving money on your electric bill and saving the planet all at the same time.
