In the interior design of any structure, there are various key factors that must be borne in mind. By sticking to the basic tenets given below, most of the important issues will be tackled. Each of these has an important role to play and it may be utilized in several ways depending on the kind of place you are working on.

Unity: This entails the idea that the entire home or any other building is to be seen as one unit, partitioned or divided only by walls and staircases, and that there should be a certain amount of intrinsic consistency in the design of the unit as an overall entity. The central theme should never be lost sight of.

Balance: This means properly adjusting items in a given space. It is necessary to put things with similar visual appeal at cautiously selected positions to attain that perfect balance from a specific point. Balance can be of three types. The first is symmetrical, which is the most conventional, and the easiest to achieve. The second kind is asymmetrical balance, which is very much in vogue, but needs a good deal of creativity. A radial balance is the third kind, which is achieved by defining a small core and placing things around that.

Proportion: This is basically to do with the dimensions and proportions of the articles. It is vital that different objects are in sync with each other and with the space in terms of proportions. Lack of proportion will cause imbalance that will adversely affect the look of the room, as some things will be over focussed while others will not receive adequate visibility.

Focus: Having a focus in a room is evidence of good interior design. The focal article may be a piece of furniture or even a decorative piece such as a painting or a statue. The item must be such that it is important in the overall design of the room and is able to attract the attention of the onlooker. It must look attractive, but not look out of the scheme of things.

Rhythm: A well-designed room must have a component of rhythm as well. This implies that the design must have a feeling of continuity and smooth flow. Arches, ornate designs on walls and ceilings, carefully chosen paintings, repetition of colours and designs etc will help you achieve a rhythm.

Keeping these principles in mind will help in effective and attractive interior designing of your house. It is advisable to hire a good interior design professional who can handle all these factors and also assist you with the details.
