The American Film Institute promoted a list of the top 50 stars from American films back in 1999. These are the stars from the golden era of Hollywood, the ones that began it all. While a lot of of today's stars may have eclipsed their talent, they are even so always going to be remembered.

The listing begins out with the famous Humphrey Bogart. Humphrey Bogart acted in 75 movies beginning in the 1930's and up to the 1950's. His most remarkable role was maybe the role of Rick Blaine in one of the most famous films of all times, "Casablanca". He was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1899. He passed away on January 14, 1957 from cancer of the esophagus.

The next artist on theregister, at the number 2 spot, is Archibald Alexander Leach, who is of course, better acknowledged as Cary Grant. Cary Grant was born on January 18, 1904. He passed away November 29, 1986. Jimmy Stewart, who played the lead in the much loved Christmas show that is still shown every year, "It's a Wonderful Life", follows him at the number 3 spot.

Marlon Brando, Jr. Born April 3, 1924 and passed on July 1, 2004 comes in at number 4 on the record. He is followed by Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz on May 10, 1899 and passed on June 22, 1987. Fred Astaire's theater and film career spanned a sum of seventy-six years. During that time he made thirty-one musical films. He made 10 movies with the associate with whom he was most often linked, Ginger Rogers.

Number six on the inventory is Henry Fonda, born May 16, 1905, died August 12, 1982. Henry is followed at number 7 by Clark Gable, whose most famous character was the well-known "Rhett Butler" in "Gone With the Wind", which when accounting for inflation is the most profitable movie of all time.

The position of the number 8 spot goes to James Cagney. He is followed at number 9 by Spencer Tracy. Spencer Tracy was part of one of the most lucrative movie pairings in times gone by along with Katharine Hepburn, who just happens to hold the top spot on the list of actresses.

The only performer from the silent film period to make the register comes in at number ten. Charlie Chaplin began his illustrious career back in 1916, before the days of "talking" movies. His first true "talking" film came about in 1940, "The Great Dictator".

Beloved actors, actresses and films will always be subjective. Each one has a different belief. But the stars on the list of the American Film Institute's topmost 50 actors certainly made their mark on movie history.
