The Importance of Pronunciation in Spanish

You will hopefully find that your favourite Spanish guide or dictionary has a section on pronunciation. If that section is in any way typical, it will deal largely with the pronunciations of individual sounds of the language. It's surely a helpful starting point to consider how to pronounce, say, "the Spanish rolled r" or "the Spanish 'i' vowel" in isolation, or in certain example words. But your strategy for improving your pronunciation also needs to go beyond this letter-by-letter or sound-by-sound approach.

A good thing about learning Spanish is that in this language the words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled. That is the beauty of learning how to produce the letters in the alphabet. You are killing two birds with one stone when you take this direction of learning. You see once you learn the letter sounds you have learned to write and read in Spanish. When you hear the sound you write the sound of those letters you hear and you have actually spelled the word. It is the same thing when you read Spanish. Make the sound of the letters and you will be saying the word and if you already know what that word means, you are on your way to learning to read in Spanish.

There are so many tools available today to help one to learn. The English/Spanish Dictionary, audio tapes, and online courses can all help you to learn; if you want to learn. That's right. I said if you want to learn. Studies revealed that if you don't have an intrinsic motivation, you won't try to learn. Perception plays a large role in the situation. The tutor mentioned above can provide feedback and support to you and this will create feeling of competence that will push you to learn Spanish.

You can work with these letters and their sounds. You will be amazed how easy it is to pick up sounds and start talking Spanish with perfect diction in no time. If you can hook the alphabet sounds with a good online course, you will be amazing to your friends in no time at all.

One last key to learning to pronounce Spanish correctly is patience. Hopefully you are positive and excited about learning or why are you doing it? Search the Internet for materials that you can help to supplement your reference guide. Free materials are available if you just look around. CDs, DVDs, e-books, and online videos can all augment your hand reference guide that you have created. Practice, practice, and more practice will help you to learn to pronounce Spanish correctly. Master the pronunciations and you will not only speak fluently but you can now help others to do the same!

So in careful speech, 'poeta ingls' ("English poet") would be syllabified 'po.e.ta.ing.ls', in five syllables, but in normal, relaxed speech would tend to be 'poe.taing.ls'; 'come y toma' ("eat and drink") would be 'co.mei.to.ma'; 'mi amigo' would be 'mia.mi.go' etc. The word 'zanahoria' ("carrot") is often pronounced as three syllables, 'za.na(h)o.ria': as mentioned before, the 'h' isn't pronounced and doesn't affect syllabification.
