Many businesses welcome the opportunity to compete for government bids, and ultimately secure a lucrative contract. However, not all takes the time that is required in order to avoid making costly mistakes with these bids and proposals.

These bids can range in volume of work and dollar amount, depending on the type of contract. Private companies can benefit in many ways by having a government contract for their business. For instance, companies will receive a steady, monthly income that many companies do not have.

In an effort to reduce the federal government's carbon footprint, a presidential executive order directs purchasing agencies to identify and give preference to government bids for buying products and services that pose fewer threats to the environment. There are several guiding principles which need to be considered to assess the environmental performance of products marketed to the federal purchasing agencies.

Another positive reason to participate in and win government bids is that this will strengthen an organization's client portfolio. Having a government agency listed among your top clients will make your organization even more attractive to other clients who might be considering your company's services or products.

When the time comes to sell the company, a government agency will increase the value of the business to potential buyers, primarily for the same reasons that the business has benefited you. This is also true if you need to apply for a business loan or line of credit.

Life Cycle Perspective The life cycle perspective is related to how much use the federal government can get from the product or service before it needs to be replaced.

Neatness Counts The best advice that any of us received in school was to submit neat work. This is also true when it comes to government bids. Submitting an unprofessional proposal in style or appearance to the government is grounds for dismissal. Double check your proposal for typos, blank pages, smudges, and poor grammar before sealing the envelope.

What Happens When You Assume? Preconceived notions about the needs of government agencies are an easy way to be eliminated from consideration. You may be surprised to learn what the government is willing to purchase from your company.

Just the Facts, Please Focus on the fundamentals that will make your bid rejection-proof. Make sure that you respond to each requirement within the solicitation. Provide a clear solution to the problem while highlighting the benefits of choosing your company over another.
