For years, many have held that conventional wisdom dictates that Six Sigma is most appropriate for implementation in large multi million dollar companies. Massive companies all over the globe have used Six Sigma to save millions of dollars by using efficiently managed processes to cut costs and increase profits. The general thought has been that Six Sigma is best confined to huge companies that employ thousands. But this is not necessarily so. The very nature of the Six Sigma orthodoxy is to implement efficiencies and control them. That measure can be applicable to any sized business, including new startups.

Six Sigma certified managers at a small company is always an assest. New startup managers with Six Sigma Black Belt training will only flourish at young companies with a few employees, and as their careers advance, they will look toward larger companies at which to use their skills. Six Sigma teaches a tried and true method of increasing profits by controlling costs. Its that simple, and remains a basic tenet of running a business of any size. When an employer of a startup company hires a Six Sigma trained employee, he has the comfort of knowing that his company will be run with a sharp eye dedicated to increasing profit.

It is not uncommon for startup companies to be plagued by a lack of organization and monitored procedures. Setting up these is a skill that is honed through Six Sigma training, during which managers are taught to scrutinize what procedures are in place and how to manage their success. The introduction of the Six Sigma methodology in a small business can be especially effective in managing the daily operations and keeping a close watch on profitability.

A good working relationship with employees is one of the marks of a good startup manager. However, often in the socializing, the manager can overlook the very things he is supposed to be managing. Six Sigma training teaches the manager to stay focused on all of the ongoing processes of the company with an ultimate goal of profitability. Startup managers more than others need to stay on point in this way, because a lack of attention can signify immediate death of a young company.

Six sigma training also allows the startup manager to become a medium-sized company manager as the company leaves the incubation stage. In many cases, when the startup grows, the management team doesn't -- it's either acquired or the business goes public, and in both cases the management team is often replaced by professionals with impressive management backgrounds. 6 sigma certification provides the start up manager with professional mettle -- and, sometimes, a job.
