It's tough being a photographer during a recession. Granted, everyone has a hard time in a recession. Consumers generally spend less and less because they themselves have to try to make it through the hard times too. In the process of skimming the fat off of their spending, people often see using a professional photographer as a non-essential. This is why making money becomes much harder, although not impossible, for a photographer during a recession.

If you find yourself struggling as a photographer during a recession, prepare yourself for battle. It's not the time to give up but rather the time to strategize and develop a plan of action. By informing yourself of your options, adopting a disciplined approach and making good business choices you can actually continue to earn an income as a professional photographer. The decisions you make during this period will either keep your business afloat or sink it.

Sometimes it takes a major crisis like a recession to sharpen certain business skills, such as selling your services. This is a time in your career where you will need to learn how to present your business in the most optimal, attractive way. You will also need to learn how to make the most of every opportunity that passes your way. In our most recent article, Photography Business Choices in a Recession we explore the way that great business decisions and sharpened skills can help you thrive and survive during a recession.

The key principles that we discuss from a photographer's perspective are:

- Sources of income that never dry up for a photographer

- Business decisions that bring success even in a recession

- How to make money as a Photographer during recession

- Engaging regular clients during recession

- Marketing your services as a photographer during recession

- And more

Many photographers falsely believe that their only option during recession is to find alternative work. This is in fact the last option that you should go for. As you know, taking a break from your business will mean investing a lot of extra work later on, to try to get the business back off the ground and back to a point of profitability. Sadly, more often than not, the discouraged photographer will not return to the work they love even once the recession has subsided.

Until you have explored and exhausted every option available to you, don't even think about walking away from your photography business. The right knowledge, mixed with the same passion that made you start your business in the first place will get you through economic hard times.
